November 2012 Total Solar Eclipse over Australia

November 14, 2012 Total Solar Eclipse

The path of totality for this eclipse cut across Queensland, Australia in the vicinity of Cairns shortly after sunrise, then continued over a large stretch of the Pacific Ocean. The centerline duration in Australia was about 2 minutes, of which Eric saw about 1m 37s at his location near Mareeba at latitude 17° 1' 49" S, longitude 145° 25' 45" E, elevation 1460 feet. The short duration allowed better visibility of "Bailey's Beads" than normal (see second photo below), and "shadow bands" were also observed on the ground shortly after totality ended.

All pictures of the eclipse were taken with a Nikon digital camera at maximum 24x zoom.
