May 2002 Alaska Cruise

Skagway, Alaska and White Pass

May 15, 2002
Latitude 59° 27' N, Longitude 135° 19' W (Skagway)

Skagway is at the northern limit of the so-called "Inside Passage" to Alaska. From there, participants in the gold rush of 1898 used one of two perilous trails, or later the remarkable White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad (completed in 1900), to reach the Canadian Klondike. Today you can also reach White Pass by road from Skagway, but the rails are much more fun! The round trip from Skagway to White Pass takes about 3 hours. As you can see, White Pass is appropriately named — there is still plenty of snow in May! (Most of it will be gone by the end of summer, we were told.)
